Gregory, being the eldest son, benefited the most from his fathers Will. I have not repeated extracts here as the transcript of the Will is detailed in his father’s account above. He married Jane and their children were all baptised in Great Chart. Two of his sons died at the age of two years and the remaining son before his eighth birthday in 1671. Gregory, himself had also died by then as his wife Jane was described as a widow in the burial entry for son Thomas. The question arises whether the high incidence of mortality in his young family had anything to do with the Plague that was prevalent in England in the 1660’s; the Great Plague of London was at its’ worst in 1665. He left no male heirs and as a Will has not been found, I think it probable that his surviving brother Richard, who married in East Peckham around the time of Gregory’s death, inherited a substantial part of Gregory’s wealth.

Elizabeth was a beneficiary of both her parents Wills. Although she was only 12 years old when her mother died she was left some of her mother’s clothes amongst other household articles. The Wills above should be read for completion, but for convenience I have copied the relevant paragraph of Deborah’s Will.

Item I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth my daughter, the half of my brass pots and the biggest of my brass kettles, the pot brass stupnet, the three legged kettle, and feather bed bedstead, a pillow two bolsters, coverlet blankets and one cotton sheet, six pairs of hempen sheets, one dozen of fine napkins and half a dozen of course, two long towels, the great chest with two locks, the box, one pair of fine calico pillow boards, my green petticoat, my best flannel petticoat and my working day petticoat, my black gown, one pair of course pillow coats, one long table cloth, six great trenchers, my enamel ring

An Elizabeth Henham married David Oldfield in Elham Kent on 29thJuly 1679. I know of no other Elizabeth Henhams in this time scale, so I think it is safe to conclude that this is the same one.

Spouse:                   David Oldfield

Marriage Date:          29 Jul 1679

Marriage Place:        Elham Kent

7(1.1.4) Deborah Henham

8 x Great Aunt

————————————————————————————————————————

Birth Date:                about 1642

Birth Place:               Great Chart Kent

I have not found a record of Deborah’s christening, but if the assumption is made that the beneficiaries of the Parent’s Wills are in chronological order of birth, then Deborah would have been born about 1642. The clothes her mother left her would have been far too large for an eleven year old. Again for convenience, I have copied the section of her mother’s Will which relates to her.

Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Deborah, the next bigger pot and kettle, a pint stupnet, six pairs of sheets, two pair of them end of the shelf under the window, half a dozen of fine napkins and half a dozen of course, a short towel and a pair of plain pillow boards with (blank space) on them and one other pair with two ‘D’s’ upon them, two pewter platters, two porringers, a basin, the bed and bedstead, (blank space) big bolster and blanket, bedstead in the further chamber, my serge petticoat, my green waistcoat, my face cloth, my childbed sheets, the chest which is at her uncle Richard’s house, and the chest in the chamber which hath no lock. A little box there, six great trenchers, my little ring with a button on it.

From the IGI website, I have found that a Deborah Henham married John (no surname given) in Headcorn on 19th May 1668. This surely has to be the same Deborah.

 Spouse:                   John

 Marriage Date:         19 May 1668

Marriage Place:        Headcorn Kent
