"I also enclose a typed paragraph of a book I have got about Queen Eleanor. I was told some 20 odd years ago by John Engeham (he's daed now), that a Professor friend told him the name originated around Bedfordshire, and in view of the fact that King John appointed Alan Engeham to wait upon the Constable of Dover Castle and King John was Eleanor's son, I think it may have been the start of the Engehams. He was Queen Eleanor's butler. He did very nicely out of it."

Also from Great Engeham Farm website: Great Engeham Farm takes its name from the Engeham family who have a colourful history and have played a major role in the development of Woodchurch. A notable event is the peasants rebellion of 1450 under Jack Cade when an Alan Engeham was pardoned by the King after agreeing to return home peacefully to Woodchurch.
